About Us
Sung Kim is a California state board licensed acupuncturist and nationally certified by the National Certification Commission in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. He obtained his Master of Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine from the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in San Francisco, California and his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Southern California.
His 1,000 hour clinical internship was spent at various facilities such as the Rehabilitation Ward of California Pacific Medical Center; majority of patients treated at CPMC were undergoing post-stroke or spinal cord injury rehabilitation. He is a medical consultant to the Chronic Pain Documentary Series and is a subject in their series of interviews.
He became interested in Chinese Medicine when he was diagnosed as 100% permanently disabled in both arms by three different medical doctors; the diagnosis was bilateral tendonitis and tenosynovitis. After trying anti-inflammatory medication, wrist splints and researching the possibility of surgery, he read that acupuncture could be helpful for his condition.
Upon treatment with acupuncture and herbs, he realized pain relief and improvement in his other symptoms. Other symptoms at the time were back and knee pain, chronic fatigue, insomnia, dysthymia (a form of mild depression), frequent nighttime urination (4 – 5 times per night) and diarrhea or loose stools. With consistent course of treatment using acupuncture and herbs, his “permanent disabilities” completely resolved as well as all the other symptoms and he’s living a happy and healthy life.
He currently lives in Oakland with his wife and hopefully a dog in the near future. His interests include soccer (futbol), FC Barcelona, dogs, yoga, Chi Gong and Pu Erh tea.
Susan Ko is a California state board licensed acupuncturist and nationally certified by the National Certification Commission in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in acupuncture and herbal medicine. She obtained her Master of Science in Traditional Chinese Medicine from the American College of Traditional Chinese Medicine in San Francisco, California and holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of California at Berkeley. With her interest in women’s and community health, she has worked in a number of public and private settings including a medical outreach project in Paraguay, South America for Amigos de las Americas, Women’s Community Clinic in SF, and as a full time staff under Dr. Lifang Liang, renowned specialist in infertility and gynecology.
Susan’s interest in holistic medicine began from personal experience after becoming sick during a rural medical outreach program in South America. She was left in a weakened state and could find little in western medicine that could help; a friend suggested seeing her homeopath and out of desperation, she sought her help. Through the homeopath’s care she had a profound recovery, and this remarkable healing experience led her to explore holistic medicines, impressing on her the importance of addressing the whole person (mind, body, spirit). Her studies have included homeopathy, naturopathy, nutrition, human energy systems, and Chinese Medicine.
She became especially passionate about Chinese Medicine after returning from a trip to China and Tibet where she learned qigong, was introduced to the historical and cultural roots of the medicine, and witnessed the medicine’s widespread and effective use in treating a vast array of disease in those countries.
In her practice, Susan enjoys bringing together the knowledge and insights gained from her experiences with various holistic medicine disciplines. She treats a wide variety of conditions chronic and acute through her use of Chinese herbs, acupuncture, food and nutrition guidance, lifestyle counseling, and other therapies as deemed appropriate. She has a particular passion in treating women’s health concerns especially infertility (both men and women), couples going through IUI and IVF, menstrual and menopausal imbalances, associated emotional swings, osteoporosis, chronic migraines, just to name a few.
She currently lives in Oakland with her husband and when not practicing, enjoys slowing down to good food, good music, and spending time with friends and family.
